A Very Serious Third-Year Work

Scroll

“A lone figure grapples with the dual paradoxes of life/absence and self/reflection. Drawing upon a fusion of Australian contemporary choreographers and masters of the French puppetry tradition, this piece creates an alluring yet distinctly discomforting world. The idiosyncrasies of Philippe Genty and Royal de Luxe support – and at times challenge – the vibrancy of Lucy Guerin and Gideon Obarzanek. This dichotomy is given further life through a musical juxtaposition between a classical arrangement on one hand and a typical contemporary composition on the other. Thus arises a work that contemplates the relationship between self-image and self-actualisation, in which the unlikely synthesis of formal elements is distilled through the lens of the dancer’s subjectivity.

Or he mucks around with a skeleton for 8 minutes, who’s to say?”
